Cyprus pests that are a danger to homes are termites, powder post beetles, carpenter ants and woodworm.
These pests can invade your property through cracks, holes, damp areas and other entrances that unfortunately exist in all buildings. Once they establish themselves, the pests quickly reproduce and multiply. A lot of people are under the impression that treating the wood or its surface will get rid of the pests with 100% accuracy, however this is far from the truth. It will provide a certain limited amount of protection, around 50%, but if full protective measures aren't taken, the resilient pests will always find a way to invade the building and cause expensive damage to any wooden surfaces and to the building foundations. Once the building has been fully built, it would be a good idea to carry out a general fumigation once or twice a year.
Generally, it is assumed that treated lumber is protected against insects; something which is not true. When termites and other dangerous pests are pushed to the last resort, they will destroy even treated wood. Yet another reason for termite invasion is that treated lumber tends to be used in damp areas. The lumber is damaged over time and termites and other threatening organisms can easily destroy it. For this reason, any wood, treated or not, can be in danger if the appropriate measures aren't taken.
In Cyprus, there's a very serious problem with termites and other wood-destroying pests. Residences that are close to fig trees, carob trees, almond trees, bamboo, etc. can be in great danger. Soil that was once harvested presents us with the most serious of cases involving termites and other pests.
Every building has a different structural makeup, and for this reason a separate study must be undertaken by our experts.
During its construction, the average building requires preventative fumigation 4 or 5 times.
